There is no Purpose to Life

See, I can participate in the clickbait hustle as well. But, this isn’t necessarily total clickbait propaganda.

If I sat here and asked you the age old question “what’s the purpose of life,” how would you answer that? I have to assume that everyone has thoroughly digested this question by now. I’m sure you have. I don’t take you for a damn fool.

Regardless, everyone has their own answer and there is no right or wrong so when I tell you that the conclusion that I’ve come to is that there is no purpose to life, take it for what it is.

I don’t think that humans are here for any specific reason. I mean, we could be, but I’m not going to put all my eggs in one basket. I also don’t think that humans are any more special than the other species on the planet. Just a luck of the draw that we’re the only species who came equipped with the ability of conscious awareness. It’s our superpower.

I’m not that cynical though, I promise you. Even though I truly do believe that there’s no purpose to life, there’s a silver lining hidden in there somewhere.

The silver lining in my cynicism is perspective. With a healthy dose of cynicism comes a shred of freedom. Freedom in the fact that if there is no purpose to life––in my eyes at least––then why not try to make this the best life possible? Let’s fucking squeeze everything that we can out this thing we call life.

We can look at it like this; if there is no purpose to life, then what you do essentially shouldn’t matter, right? Whether you wanted to be strung out on drugs living on the streets or working hard to be successful ultimately doesn’t matter. Maybe to society it might, but in terms of there being a purpose to life, not really. It’s your life you do as you please. What does it matter if you choose one path over the other?

You guys are probably screaming as you read this but let’s continue to view the world through this perspective for right meow.

After thinking about this question over the years and ultimately coming up with that conclusion––and that outlook is always subject to change––I came to my next question; if none of this does matter and there is no point to life, which one of those paths do I desire most?

Clearly, making it to the finish line having lived a successful life would be the tits, no brainer. For most of us, that’s the preferred choice. Once I started to realize that there was no point, no purpose, it gave me this clarity that it really doesn’t fucking matter what I do, but I’m gonna have a hell of a better time here on earth if I choose to head down the path of success.

Staying on middle ground with a lot of things throughout my life has slowly become my M-O. I roll this way because I feel like once you identify with something, or start clinging to expectations, it can fuck your world up when things don’t go according to plan.

Let’s just say that you believe that the purpose of life is to find your purpose, or find a soulmate, or to start up a family, or whatever you believe in. Well, what happens if those scenarios aren’t in the cards for you? What happens if you believe that the purpose of life is to find your purpose, but you never do? You’re going to be devastated.

Same thing goes with starting up a family or anything else that you want to claim as the purpose for being here. I’m not trying to be a Debbie downer here folks. If you believe that the purpose of life is to treat others well and show compassion and that’s the very thing guiding you to be a better person, then you’re ten steps ahead of me. I’m the schmuck. Or if you believe that the purpose of life is to leave your legacy and that’s what drives you to change the world, that now puts you twenty steps ahead of me and I’m an even bigger schmuck.

Like I said, there is no right or wrong. Whatever’s driving you to be a better person, do that shit. This blog was more or less helping me manage my thoughts on an idea that I wanted to write about. That’s it. Through my cynicism, I was able to find a silver lining that drives me to want to take full advantage of this life. What’s driving you?

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” ― Hunter S. Thompson
