Not so Tools of Titans

Before you start here’s your disclaimer: know now that there is a lot jam packed into this blog. People tend to be turned off if a lot of information is thrown at time all at once. So instead of getting nothing out of this, follow these steps so you can walk away with something.

If you’re not a daily reader I don’t expect you to read the entire thing. Friends and family, you guys get no breaks. You guys better be reading this from start to finish.

The best way to go about this if you’re not interested in reading the entire piece is scrolling down and picking a highlighted section that catches your interest. Some of this is nonsense thoughts while other parts are just getting your foot in the door with things that I find important.

Links will be attached so you can listen to someone who’s actually qualified to talk about these subjects give you the rundown. With that being said, lets get started.

Ah, you made it. You found yourself staring at the screen reading another one of these crazy blogs. Why do you do this to yourself? You damn fools. You know I have absolutely no business in writing.

Ok. So now what’s this blog about you ask?

This blog is dedicated to a badass book that I recently picked up. That book is  Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss. Before you read any further grab yourself a copy and take my word for it. This book is a deconstruction of 200 world-class performers, billionaires, and athletes. Tim takes the most important things talked about with each guest and throws them all together in this holy grail of a book.

Next question.

What is this blog even about? Well I’m glad you asked, my friends. This is my rendition of Tools of Titans. Clearly not to that caliber, but this is everything that’s working for me in my life right meow.

Pretty much this is a combination of any realizations that I had while I was out on the trail, to anything that is important to me or has made a positive impact on my life within the past 6 months. So to wrap this up; feeling the best that I’ve felt after going through 2 years of what seemed like hell is the driving force behind why I wrote this.

What works for me won’t necessarily work for you. Also what I find important, you might find complete bullshit. But, if you’re able to walk away with at least one piece of advice from this that sticks with you for life, then this was a success and you can pay me $5 the next time you see me. Holla.

Body-Mind-Spirit

I can feel you rolling your eyes as you read that but just hear me out. I’m a firm believer in getting the body, mind, and spirit all on the same page. Everything needs to be balanced equally. If you’re on top of 1 out of the 3, that’s good, but no cigar. Getting the body in check through exercise and nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle. Making sure you have a healthy state of mind comes next. Now to wrap it up; are you doing the things that you need to do for yourself? And by “yourself” I mean spirit. Call it what you want to call it or disregard it all together. It doesn’t matter to me. I  didn’t know at the time but at different points in my life I may have had one of these areas more in check than the others. Never all on the same page though. Now a days I feel that they’re the most balanced that they’ve been thanks to a combination of everything that I have written here.

Body

Think of your body as a car and your mind as the driver. The driver can get from point A to point B only if the car has gas; and there’s no flat tires; and you’re up to date on your maintenance; and whatever other cheesy analogy you can throw in there. You get the idea though.

The mind and body are separate. Simple as that. How many times do you see athletes getting seriously injured from over training? Every damn day, dude. Most likely there was a point where the body started throwing up red flags and the mind stubbornly blew right past them. I’m sure there’s a bunch of exceptions to this but for the sake of this blog lets stick with that.

At the end of the day you have to listen to your body and take care of it. Think about all the times your body is in pain. You think that’s going to get better in time if you’re not properly taking care of it? I know this is nothing new to people, but constantly working on people older than me and seeing the amount of pain they put up with on a daily basis is a real eye opener. It’s a good insight into the potentiality of my future if I don’t start working on this right meow. One day I had an 86 year old woman on my table who easily looked like she was in her sixties. When I asked her what her secret was, she told me, “don’t stop moving.” 86 years old and she was doing yoga, water aerobics, and hiking three times a week. Work out, stretch, do yoga, get a massage (I may know a guy), go for a walk; you get what I’m putting down. It’s not rocket science. And for the people who say “I’m too busy to exercise” I’ll leave this here:

“Every time people contact me, they say, “Look, I know you must be incredibly busy…’ and I always think, ‘No, I’m not.” Because I’m in control of my time.” I’m on top of it. “Busy, to me, seems to imply ‘out of control.’ Like, “Oh my God, I’m so busy. I don’t have any time for this shit!” To me, that sounds like a person who’s got no control over their life.” – Derek Sivers

And trust me, I get that people can be busy in life. I really do. But chances are you can free up at least an hour of your day to show your body some love so it can return the favor down the road. No one wants a broken down car with only 50,000 miles on it.

Mind – A healthy state of mind will make you or break you throughout your life. I thought meditation alone was the key to a healthy mind. In my personal opinion, I believe that that’s one of the most important ways to help maintain a healthy mind. But I do believe there’s a lot more to it. Self-talk is one crucial aspect. How is your self-talk when no one is around? Do you tear yourself a new one the daily? Or are you throwing yourself some recognition for all the hard work that you’ve been doing? If you have negative self-talk, this is where neuroplasticity is going to come into play. Neuroplasticity in short, is the ability to change our mind and the way we think. This is done through creating new neuro connections in the mind. And don’t think you need to be the next coming of Christ to do this. It’s not as hard as you think. I tried to find a good video to break this down and they were all pretty rough, but this one is straight to the point without all the science talk added to it:

Next we go into daily physical exercise to help the mind. What does exercise have to do with the mind? Any form of exercise is going to help you blow off any excess mental energy, as well as giving yourself a break from thinking about the same things over and over again. Two of the ways I exercise, rock climbing and jiu jitsu, are both awesome in the fact that they’re a good form exercise involving analytical thinking. Jiu jitsu is like playing a game of a life or death chess that gets you out of your head. I know for those 3 hours I’m not thinking about anything other than jiu jitsu There’s very little to think about when you’re trying to defend someone from choking you out. Where as rock climbing turns into a mental puzzle anytime you take on a new route. Again, there’s very little to think about while you’re 20 feet in the air regardless if you’re in a harness. And the last pieces of the puzzle; reading, writing, and doing the introspective homework. Read a damn book from time to time. Learn something. Writing; ask yourself some questions to get that brain going. Something I picked up from Tools of Titans, “If you have a 10 year plan and know how to get there, you have to ask why can’t you do this in 6 months? Sometimes it’s necessary to go through the 10 year tenure but you should always ask the question to know whether it is a story you are telling yourself or is that your reality.” And lastly, the introspective homework. Stop looking for external comforts to help cope with your internal discomfort. A new purse isn’t getting you any closer to getting over depression. There’s only so many times you can mask the symptoms before you start to realize that you need to get to the root.

Spirit – Spirit, soul, consciousness; whatever you want to call it. Where to even begin? I think it’s something more than we’re able to fully comprehend. I think it helps us throughout life as long as you listen closely. It’s what you feel, man. I hope you read that in a dirty hippies voice by the way. A few years ago I was really torn on if I should devote all my time into making music or helping people. Music wasn’t what I was being drawn towards to when I finally got brutally honest with myself. I had the love for music, but not in the way that’s needed to be successful. Up until that point though, I thought music was the answer. That was until I listened to Chet Fakers Live Sessions cover of “No Diggity.” In that very moment of my first time hearing that song, I realized “oh shit, I don’t have this whole music thing in my bones.” And I’m not talking solely about the singing, but every musical element that went into making that song. It’s along the same lines as seeing a phenomenal athlete. Hey, Michael Jordan, you were meant to play basketball my man. Muhammed Ali also didn’t come across boxing by accident. And I’m not trying to say that it’s “destiny” or “fate” or that everything happens for a reason. I have no scientific answer as to what it is. But like I said, I believe it’s something more than we’re able to fully understand. Just listen closely and watch out for the breadcrumbs in life, they’ll be there if you’re paying attention. Enjoy:

Health

Gut Health – This one is big. Up until the trail I don’t think I ever thought twice about gut health. Just one of those things from time to time where I remember a vague memory of my mom chewing my ear off about how I should start taking probiotics. What do moms know though? Am I right? Kidding. I’ll be damned though, that crazy lady was on to something. The gut microbiome has a direct line of connection straight up to the brain. Breaking it down to where the gut microbiome directly influences brain chemistry and if you couldn’t guess, our brain chemistry directly influences our gut. Holla at me. So why is that a big deal? For starters, researchers are linking an inflamed gut to a change in the brain chemistry involving anxiety and depression. Also a disrupted gut microbiome can result in cravings for certain foods. And I’m not talking about good foods. When all is said and done, take your probiotics, drink your kombucha, and eat your fermented foods. This little intro is nothing more than dipping your toes into the importance of a healthy gut.

Physiology Change Through Ice & Heat modalities – The use of ice and heat modalities to alter the physiology in the body, elevating my mood, and helping out manage pain, are both great tools that I’ve come across over the past couple of months to help me get through these days. I’m going to break this down to layman’s terms and at the end of this I’ll leave a bunch of the fancy scientific data to hopefully bring this full circle for y’all. I’ll start with the sauna. Up until a few months ago I’ve maybe only used a sauna once in my life. I did however attend a hot yoga class one time and thought that that was where I was going to die. Downward dogging my way into the after life. I heard Dr. Rhonda Patrick on the Joe Rogan Experience talk about how she uses the sauna to manage some of her more high strung days in life. The reasoning behind it was that it releases all these feel good chemicals into the body among a grocery list of other positive health benefits.

For Your Brain:

  • Helps grow new brain cells.
  • Helps your brain function faster.
  • Improves memory, attention and focus.
  • Helps prevent degenerative diseases.
  • Enhances the power of meditation and visualization.
  • Relieves anxiety and depression.
  • Gives you a natural drug free ‘high’

For Your Body:

  • Helps muscles grow bigger, stronger and more efficient.
  • Increases longevity with various anti-aging benefits.
  • Causes a massive release of growth hormone naturally.
  • Boosts your immune system.
  • Improves insulin sensitivity (lowers risk of diabetes and metabolic diseases)

Thankfully my gym has a sauna so I thought I’d put it to the test. I’ve stayed in anywhere from 15 minutes up to 30 minutes. Personally for me I feel that 15 minutes is too short to really notice a whole lot going on. If I can manage to stay in there for 30 minutes on the other hand, I come out feeling as if I just got a system reboot. Out of everything that I’ve tried to help battle anxiety stressed filled days, 30 minutes in the sauna and meditation are the two most effective for me. Besides the positive side effects with the releasing of chemicals, dealing with the heat of a sauna for that long also helps build mental toughness. Now along with heat, you can also use ice modalities/cold-water immersion to alter your physiology and help elevate your mood. Cryotherapy is starting to become my new go to for pain management. On my real achy days I’ll hop in and leave feeling virtually pain free. Along with Cryotherapy, you can indulge in ice baths/cold showers to utilize the health benefits of cold therapy. I’ll try to end every shower with 30-60 seconds of ice cold water which easily out weighs the option of the misery that comes along with an ice bath. There’s a method to the madness.

Binaural beats – When looking for good binaural beats, this can be a hit or miss. Especially if you go searching on youtube. Just because it says, “heart chakra healing” doesn’t always guarantee that that is what it’s doing. And most likely it sounds like shit. But lets backtrack a few steps and talk about what binaural beats actually are for those who don’t know. Binaural beats are two different tones at different frequencies separated into each ear. This results in your brain producing the third frequency with the intention of altering the brains frequency to produce a desired result. Take a look:binaural_beats

Most of you are probably reading this still wondering what the fuck is going on. Fair enough. Lets say that you were having trouble falling asleep. You would listen to a binaural beat song in the Theta or Delta waves as both are geared towards sleeping. When you enter flow state, your brain waves shit from beta waves down to alpha and theta waves. Every frequency has its own purpose:

brain-waves-graph-720x582

So as for me personally, I use binaural beats for a bunch of various reasons. It can be anything from listening to a song in the alpha wave category while warming up before a workout to help promote a state of flow; to listening to theta waves while mediating; to throwing on delta waves on some of my more restless nights where I can’t sleep. You have nothing to lose by trying them out so give it a shot. There are a ton online that you can try for free but my personal favorites that I’ve come across are by Cory Allen. Both of his volumes are worth the price compared to some of the bullshit that’s out there. Also “Brain Power” and “High Focus” by Kelly Howell on iTunes are a close second.

You can check out Cory Allens’ binaural beats & soundcloud at: https://www.aubreymarcus.com/binaural-beats/

Flow – Do you even flow? Everyone has experienced a state of flow in their life at least once, but probably more times than you can count. Think about anytime that you’ve been so immersed in your passion, a craft, or a sport, where you’ve lost track of time while everything around you fades away. That is flow my friends. A moving meditation where the mind is silent. There’s no thinking about what your next move is going to be. So if we experience flow on a regular basis why write about this? Because the benefits of experiencing flow on a regular occurrence have such a profound effect on your life that to not try and initiate flow on a regular basis would be doing yourself a disservice. Check this talk out from Steven Kotler; you know, someone who is actually qualified to be giving a breakdown on what’s really going on behind flow:

If you’re trying to dive more into the science behind flow, you can check out his book, The Rise of Superman.

Theories-Realizations-Hippy Nonsense

The little things – So this is nothing more than my own theory but behind the woo-woo there’s some logic there. Maybe. I’m pretty sure on some level everyone has their own battles with OCD and superstitions. This can be anything from being a control freak, to the volume on the car radio having to be on an even number (Billy). For me it was a little bit of both. Sometimes habits of perfectionism can get the better of me along with crazy little superstitions. As trivial as some of these things may seem, I started to notice the effect they had on my life. Every time you give into a little OCD spasm, you now gave it power over you no matter how trivial the experience. Going back to the volume in the car; reinforcing that the volume has the be on an even number otherwise life ceases to exist as we know it. On a micro level that is producing anxiety in your life which in return is making it harder for you to break away from letting go of control. Next time you experience a little OCD/superstition spasm, try to not give in and watch what happens. It’s probably going to feel like you’re dying to be honest. Ok, maybe not that extreme, but it won’t go without some unnoticed resistance. That alone should show you how something so “trivial” really isn’t all that trivial. It should get you thinking that maybe there’s a little more going on behind the scenes. Learn how to deal with things being out of your control starting with the little things.

Play – As adults (can’t really speak for myself) we need to play. How many older people do you come across who look like they got the life sucked out of them? Life has literally defeated those people. You can even come across relatively young people who have that puckered look on their face all day long. You know exactly the puckered look that I’m talking about. Yeah, life is slowly starting to defeat those people also. Not letting that little kid aspect of your being burnout from the grind of life will keep you young at heart. It makes life that much easier when you can keep the play alive. There’s a lot you can learn from kids, and play might be one of the most important things. As people get older, the realities of life start to set in and they start to lose that childlike innocence. There’s no more time for play. They’re an adult now, they’re not allowed to have fun. Didn’t you know that? At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what you do for play. Just make sure to keep that childlike playfulness in your every day life. So moral of the story? Next time you come across kids at the park, watch them until you creep at least 5 parents out. Anything less than 5 and you’re weak. Actual moral of the story? Don’t ever take yourself too serious otherwise it’s going to be a long life.

Not giving yourself time to think – How many times have you psyched yourself out before a first date or job interview? Or how about the countless number of times that you’ve talked yourself out of going to gym? Don’t even answer, shorty. I already know. My solution to this is “mental override.” Those days where no part of me wants to go to the gym, those are the days that I don’t even entertain any self-talk trying to get me to skip out on going. Don’t acknowledge any thoughts that will give you the time of day to slowly change your mind. Waking up at 6 am for yoga is about as miserable as it gets. If I lay there thinking about all the reasons on why I should go back to sleep, 10 out of 10 times I’ll successfully talked myself into going back to sleep. But if I wake up not even entertaining those kinds of thoughts, I’ll make it to yoga every time…despite the sour look on my face. When it comes down to it, this is easier said than done. Again though, this is possible through neuroplasticity and that constant mental repetition override on changing the way you think.

“A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts, so he loses touch with reality and lives in a world of illusions.” – Alan Watts

Getting out of your head and moving into how you feel – This is probably the most important realization that I came across over the past couple of months. I’m pretty much your typical type A over thinker as I’m sure most people are. For me at least, I would try to logic everything to death. I needed an answer, there was absolutely no way around it. It was like my brain didn’t know how to accept defeat. But it wasn’t until I went through options A-Z on an issue that was bothering me, only to realize that I still didn’t have an answer. And even after going through options A-Z,  I was still stressed as well as obsessed with trying to figure out a solution. That’s when it occurred to me that maybe I can’t logic everything to death. Those times where logic doesn’t work, I noticed I should start paying attention to how something may resonate with me instead. Try not to get stuck in these insidious thought patterns like I was. Sometimes there’s not an answer for everything and you have to be ok with that.

“It’s ok to worry, stress, self criticize, we just tend to make it worse than it needs to be and with meditation or mindfulness you’re able to draw the line. When you play it out for the 17th time in your head just ask is this useful?” – Joseph Goldstein

You can dream but don’t neglect the execution – Yes those are the lyrics from J. Coles’ Change. One of my daily mantras. As much of these books that I read, videos that I watch, or podcast that I listen to, at a certain point you have to start doing something about it. Whenever we experience that feeling of victory, we get a release of dopamine into the body. Now you know why it feels good to read or watch anything inspirational. But just because you’ve watched the latest TED Talk or read the next best book, it won’t mean shit unless you follow through on that initial burst of inspiration. One day while working on a regular client of mine, we started talking about my future plans regarding my career. At that time in my life I was unsure of what direction to head in but knew that even as much as I loved massage, I couldn’t do it full-time for the rest of my life. Her reply is something that’s stuck with me until this day: “it’s good that you’re aware of that because now you know that if you get stuck doing massage full-time for the rest of your life, you’ll have no one else to blame but yourself.” The simplicity of hearing that flipped a switch making me realize I had to start making better use of my time to make sure that I have the type of future that I want. I think when you’re really honest with yourself and listen closely, the answer is right in front of your face. I’ll wrap this up with two parts of Ryan Holidays book, Ego Is the Enemy, that completely changed my life in the sense that I now very rarely allow “dead time” to be apart of my days.

“According to Greene, there are two types of time in our lives: dead time, when people are passive and waiting, and alive time, when people are learning and acting and utilizing every second. Every moment of failure, every moment or situation that we did not deliberately choose or control, presents this: Alive time. Dead time. Which will it be?”

“If your purpose is something larger than you-to accomplish something, to prove something to yourself-then suddenly everything becomes both easier and more difficult. Easier in the sense that you know now what it is you need to do and what is important to you. The other “choices” wash away, as they aren’t really choices at all. They’re distractions. It’s about the doing, not the recognition. Easier in the sense that you don’t need to compromise. Harder because each opportunity -no matter how gratifying or rewarding-must be evaluated along strict guidelines: Does this help me do what I have set out to do? Does this allow me to do what I need to do? Am I being selfish or selfless?”

In the words of Wim Hof, “Breathe, Mother Fucker.” – The importance of breath might be one of the most overlooked parts of being a human. Before you keep reading, take a few minutes to get in a comfortable seat and watch your breath. Are you breathing deep or are the breaths shallow? Are you breathing with your neck and chest or are you breathing deep down into your stomach? Do your shoulders go up like you’re shrugging weights? If you noticed that your shoulders raised while watching your breath, you are officially a chest breather. Shoebe. So now why is that a big deal? When you take short shallow breaths into the chest, you’re stimulating the sympathetic (the fight or flight) branch of the Autonomic Nervous System. Now, if this isn’t already smacking you in the face with importance, just think about what this does to your body day after day when on a micro level you’re constantly stressing out the nervous system. This is where deep diaphragmatic breathing comes into play. By breathing deep into the belly we start to calm down the sympathetic part of the Autonomic Nervous system telling the body that everything is ok. If I notice that a client I’m working on is taking extremely shallow breaths, or is nervous and having a hard time relaxing, I’ll take them through one of two different series of breathing exercises depending on which I feel will be more beneficial for them. First I’ll have them breathe into their belly for 4 seconds, hold their breath for 2 seconds, and then exhale for 7 seconds. Within 3-5 repetitions of doing that, they’ll already have started to calm the body’s Nervous system. Remember this during your next anxiety attack as it’ll calm you down in no time. That’s for my shallow chest breathers. Holla. Now if I notice someone is having a hard time relaxing and are very tense, I’ll take them through something a little more extensive. First I’ll have them take 3 slow breaths into their stomach concentrating on expanding out the belly and lower back in a front to back motion. Next I’ll have them take another 3 breaths while concentrating on only expanding the ribs out in a left to right motion. Next I’ll have them take 3 more breaths only filling up their chest and upper back as much as they can. And to finish it off I’ll have them take 3 final breaths combing all 3 of the motions together. Starting by filling up the stomach with as much air as they can (front to back, side to side which when done correctly will feel like a ball of air in your stomach) and then moving up the chest and upper back. This is great to not only help the person relax, but also soften the muscles from the inside and focusing on expanding the body with as much air as possible. Guys, I’m only writing a lot about breathing because at the end of the day it is that important. If there’s one thing you take away from all of this, it should be for you to start doing your own research on proper breathing as well as different breathing techniques.

This is an absolute must watch talking about the importance of breathing among just an overall amazing podcast and one of my all time favorites.

Compassion – As if this won’t sound like the biggest hippy bullshit that you’ve ever heard. Just bear with me. On the very few occasions that I get truly angry, these are my ways to help pull a system override on those emotions. Step one: think about the last time someone really pissed you off. Got it? Good. Step two: show the prick some love. That’s right. The first few times you try this, it’ll sound like I’m asking you to rip you limbs off one by one. As time goes on though, it’ll get easier. Sort of. Anyone who has ever done me wrong or pisses me off, in that moment, I try to think of what it would look like to seem them at their happiest. Out of all the forms of meditation, compassion meditation is known to have the biggest effect on the mind. You’ll notice that the more you do this, the easier it will be to drop the anger towards that person. In return, making you feel good. Without a doubt this is full on hippy nonsense. But hippy nonsense that works. Drop the grudges. Drop the anger. That shit is for the kids. People are going to piss you off your entire life so why not take this up as a practice now? And if someone does you wrong, just know that they’re dealing with their own shit. Or their just a complete asshole. Regardless, still show that asshole some love. They obviously need it.

Don’t take yourself so seriously – Some great advice that I came across listening to an Aubrey Marcus podcast was to look at your human like your human. Stay with me here because this is one of the most important things I do when I’m upset. If I catch myself throwing a pity party I’ll immediately flip the script and tell myself, “Aw, look at the Justin all upset. Look at the Justin feeling sorry for himself.” 10 out of 10 times I’ll bust out laughing. It’s absolutely hilarious to look at yourself from that perspective. You’ll notice what a fool you’re being in the moment and most likely just being over dramatic. The ego loves to play the role of the victim. The more you repeat these “why me” stories, the more power you give to the ego. And if you don’t burst out laughing, you’re most definitely taking yourself way too seriously. Lighten up, my friend. Try this out the next time you find yourself in a pity party and thank me after.

Pain Management – Outside of work I’m nonstop on the go with exercise. This pretty much leaves me feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck 24/7. This is everything I use to manage my pain while staying away from the garbage (Aleeve, Advil, etc.) There’s so much more you can do for pain management, but this is what’s currently working for me.
